Old-fashioned ham salad can be used as an appetizer, spread, side dish, or sandwich filler and is incredibly quick to prepare. Old-fashioned recipes are my favorite since they are perfect for using up leftover items.
There aren’t many ingredients needed to make this ham salad. It has a fantastic flavor and may be kept fresh for a few days in the refrigerator. You will understand why I adore it so much and why I choose to share this recipe with you once you have made it.
Choosing The Ham
I used leftover ham for this recipe, but you may use any ham you choose. I also make this with smoked ham when I want something different. Cured ham is another choice, but if you want to keep it simple, use ordinary cooked ham like I did.
In addition to ham, I used onion, pickle relish, and mayonnaise. There are several variations of this salad, some of which include celery stalks and hard-cooked eggs. You can also add these if you desire a salad with a higher fat content. If you dislike mayonnaise, you can substitute sour cream. Add some Dijon mustard or a splash of lemon juice for a tangy taste and you will achieve the same creaminess.
Do I Need A Food Processor?
Both yes and no can be true at the same time. Instead of chopping the ham by hand, you can use a food processor (I love this one from Mueller). The food processor is ideal if you prefer smaller bits of chopped ham. If you don’t have a meat slicer, you can use any old kitchen knife to dice your ham.
Varieties Of Ham Salad
A few components are sufficient to modify ham salad. You will get the same experience, just with a little different taste. Sauces – If you do not enjoy pickle relish, you are not required to use it. Choose yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, or even dill pickle juice as an alternative. Depending on your preferences, you can use more or less mayonnaise to adjust the flavor intensity.
As previously said, you can add celery, as well as green onions or bell peppers. You may also sprinkle freshly grated Parmesan cheese over the ham salad. You may also add nuts to the salad if you so like. Pecan nuts are traditional, however walnuts, almonds, or cashews can be substituted.
Making Ham Salad
This is most likely the simplest meat-based salad you can cook. Here are the actions to take: Gather your ingredients, which should include ham, pickle relish, mayonnaise, and seasonings (do not go overboard with the seasonings as the ham is salty already)
Process the ham in a food processor until the required structure or size is achieved. If you don’t have a food processor, you can cut the ham into the necessary size by hand.
Place the ham in the bowl and top with the remaining ingredients: pickle relish, onion, and mayonnaise. Add a bit of salt and pepper and stir well. Before serving, chill the salad for 30 minutes.
Serving Ham Salad
The salad can be prepared anyway you choose. Personally, I pair this salad with toasty crackers or slices of bread. I serve the salad with air-fried potatoes or homemade potato chips to make it a complete meal. I make my ham salad sandwiches with whole wheat bread and lettuce since the salad is excellent for sandwiches.
Storing Ham Salad
As previously said, the ham salad will keep in the fridge for a few days, up to 5 if put in an airtight container. You can also freeze the salad as soon as it is ready. Freeze the salad in an airtight jar for up to a month. Thaw the salad overnight before serving and serve as desired.
1 1/2 cups prepared ham
2 tablespoons sweet relish
1/3 cup mayonnaise
A pinch of salt and pepper
1 small sliced onion
Put the ham in the food processor first. Until very finely chopped, process. The ham can also be cut with a kitchen knife.
2. Combine chopped ham, pickle relish, and onion in a basin. Use salt and pepper to taste to season.
3. Include mayo.
4. Combine thoroughly by stirring.
5. 30 minutes before serving, chill the salad.
1 pound cooked ham
2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
3 tablespoons mayonnaise
Just a sprinkle of salt and pepper
1 sliced tiny onion
Ham is placed in a food processor. Chop until finely minced. The ham can also be chopped with a kitchen knife.
Add chopped ham, pickle relish, and onion to a bowl. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Stir until thoroughly mixed.
Chill the salad before serving for 30 minutes.
