And I know what you’re thinking: How could they possibly make something that looks so vile to eat? What can you do, though, when the emoji is so endearing? Simply put, I had to! Few days ago I was throwing a b-day party for my friend. Everyone in the intimate group of friends had to contribute a piece of hilarious entertainment.

I knew I had to make these as the ultimate joke. I can tell you that my pals were taken aback at first, but soon afterward they were rolling on the floor laughing. They do bring a smile to everyone’s face. After the initial laughter, the taste testing phase came, and even I was surprised at how good they tasted!

These cupcakes are very easy to make, but that does not affect their flavor. Simple preparation does not equate to lack of flavor. They are enriched with instant coffee granules which really gives them a rich flavor. These cupcakes are also moist and will stay that way even a day after baking!

What Makes These Cupcakes Moist?

I usually make cupcakes and muffins with butter, but I wanted to experiment with oil this time. I was inspired by olive cake from Italy. I utilized vegetable oil, but you could also use canola. In addition to giving the cupcakes a moist feel, oil makes the baking process more simpler.

Butter must be softened, which requires time if it has not already been prepared. Buttermilk is another ingredient that makes a difference. If you do not have buttermilk, you can substitute regular milk.

Why I Use Instant Coffee Granules?

Chocolate is a stunning product in every way, but even something as perfect as chocolate can be elevated. Salt, cardamom, and coffee are three of the most typical additives added to chocolate.

Coffee and chocolate appear to have a natural attraction to one another, making them a fantastic pairing. Coffee’s warmth and bitterness combined with chocolate’s sweet smoothness is a match made in heaven.

Coffee brings a richer and more fragrant ingredient to the flavor of chocolate. Both of these have distinct flavors that are complex on their own, and when combined, they create a delectable combination.

Can I Make Different Frosting?

Buttercream icing, which is rich, is used to make these cupcakes. One of the most popular and straightforward frostings is this one. Butter, confectioners’ sugar, vanilla, and melted chocolate are needed.

Even so, I made these with a sour cream frosting because I occasionally like to try something new. It simply provides a pleasing contrast to the cupcakes’ rich, dark base.

How To Decorate Cupcakes?

I’m sure you thought about it as soon as you saw the pictures. There are several ways to decorate these, some of which are simpler than others. They are not difficult to execute, but they are time consuming. Here are some ideas for decorating the cupcakes (eyes and mouth):

The simplest method is to purchase candies shaped like eyes and mouths. These can be found in candy stores or in stores that sell various pastry and dessert supplies. If you can’t find sweets in the shape of the mouth, cut out a piece of marshmallow and arrange it on the icing.
If you don’t have these, you can manufacture some out of fondant. On a powdered sugar-dusted kitchen counter, roll out the fondant and cut out eyes and a mouth. Draw the details with a small brush dipped in an edible black color.
Making your own with chocolate takes a little more time. Melt the white and dark chocolates and make the mouth out of the white chocolate. Place small blobs of white chocolate in the freezer for a few minutes. Place some dark chocolate on the white eye surface and place it in the freezer until ready to use.

Produce: 6 cupcakes


1 cup of flour
a third cup cacao powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup canola or vegetable oil
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon of instant coffee granules
12 cup of buttermilk

To prepare buttercream:

3 ounces of icing sugar
2 tbsp milk
½ cup cocoa
4 ounce chocolate melted
12 pound butter

Sweet or gummy eyes and mouth


1. Heat the oven to 350°F.

2. Sift together the flour, cacao, and baking powder in a large mixing basin.
3. Whisk together the oil, egg, buttermilk, sugar, and vanilla in a mixing basin.
4. Stir the dry components into the liquid ingredients until smooth.
5. Spoon the batter into the muffin cups, which have been prepared with paper liners.

6. Tap the muffin tray gently on the kitchen counter. For 20 minutes, bake the cupcakes.
7. Meanwhile, create the cream by combining softened butter and melted chocolate until frothy.
8. Gradually stir in the powdered sugar and milk. Mix until smooth.
9. Place the baked cupcakes on a wire rack to cool.
10. Place the cream in a piping bag fitted with a round nozzle.

11 Pipe three rounds/circles of frosting on each cupcake.

12. Add eyes and mouths to the cupcakes.

Eyes and lips made of candy or fondant


Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Whisk together the oil, egg, buttermilk, sugar, and vanilla in a mixing bowl.

Sift together the flour, cacao, and baking powder in a large bowl.

Stir the dry ingredients into the liquid ingredients until the mixture is smooth.

Put the batter into the muffin tin, which has been prepared with paper liners.

Tap the muffin tray lightly against the kitchen counter. Cupcakes should be baked for 20 minutes.

In the interim, prepare the cream by beating together softened butter and melted chocolate until airy.

Add milk and powdered sugar gradually. Beat until creamy.

The baked cupcakes are cooled on a wire rack.

Place the cream in a pastry bag with a round tip.

Pipe the frosting onto the cupcakes in the shape of three circles/rounds.

Mount and decorate the cupcakes with eyeballs.
