Everything you love about pizza is right here in a pizza roll – delicious sauce, sliced mushrooms, and melted cheese, all rolled up and devoured in two bites. The kids love them, but why shouldn’t adults? This is the perfect dinner recipe to serve with fresh salad for a new family favorite! Fresh basil leaves can even be garnished for a beautiful and delicious meal!
The Difference Between Yeast And Baking Powder Dough
It is traditionally made with yeast. However, some people are allergic to yeast. Is it possible to make pizza dough without yeast? It’s okay to use other leavening agents instead of yeast in pizza dough. For those with yeast allergies, as well as those who do not want to wait for the dough to rise, baking powder is a great alternative. While yeast and baking powder both leaven the dough, they are not the same. Yeast is a living organism, while baking powder is a chemical.
There are a few differences between these two types of dough. Yeast dough takes some time to make, since the dough has to rise. You will see the effect of baking powder after 20 minutes when you put something in the oven to bake. While yeast dough takes at least two hours to get plump, baking powder works immediately.
Baking powder dough is quite neutral in terms of flavor and you won’t pick up any flavor apart from the toppings. Yeast dough has a yeasty smell and taste. There may be more air bubbles in the dough with yeast. Also, I noticed that the crust has a different feel after it has baked. The dough with baking powder has a bit of a denser texture, but it will not compromise your pizza rolls. The flavor is neutral.
Each type of dough contains the following ingredients:
-
This dough is made with water, flour, yeast, salt, and some sugar. If you are wondering what sugar is doing here, it is feeding the yeast. You can also use honey instead of sugar.
-
This dough is made with flour, salt, baking powder, and flour. You can substitute self-rising flour that already contains the leavening agent for baking powder and flour.
Pizza dough can be made ahead and stored in the fridge. When the yeast dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out.
If you’re using baking powder dough, store it overnight in the fridge. Bring the dough to room temperature before baking.
How To Bake The Perfect Pizza
Bake your pizza rolls or pizza in a hot oven, 400°F to 500°F. Don’t overfill your rolls, because the filling may keep the dough soggy and raw.
Pizza rolls can be baked in a muffin tin, on a pizza stone, or on a wire rack, as I did. There will be some cheese spilling with the rack, but you’ll get a nice crispy bottom and top.
What Can I Use Instead Of Mushrooms?
There is no doubt that mushrooms are a versatile ingredient, and they are delicious on pizza. If you want to try something new, or just want to avoid mushrooms, try using vegetarian sausage or pepperoni instead.
In addition to thinly sliced eggplant, I like to add cheese toppings of three different types for more flavor. I recommend mozzarella, feta, and provolone.
